Palekh miniature papier-mache box depicting popular Russian folktale "At the Pike's Behest" or "Emelya and the Magic Pike.

Atop a black background, the winter scene is painted in layers of white, green, blue, red and brown egg tempera and varnished with coats of clear lacquer, and shows a young man, a large pike, a pair of yoked buckets, and two island houses(?). Embellished with gold flourishes. Interior is a rich, gleaming red.

Lid’s metal hinge is working perfectly. Excellent condition with no noted flaws.

Perfect container for keeping or gifting small jewellery items or other keepsakes. Would also make a sweet Christmas stocking stuffer.
