1950s green and purple silk taffeta party dress by Irish designer Elizabeth James. Medium (30” waist).
Spectacular, glowing cocktail dress in mossy green and electric indigo, watery-tartan silk taffeta.
Boat neck to front with a V to the back. Long, wide sash to back that can be tied in a variety of ways. The dress has a pale olive, acetate underskirt, and the bodice and arms are fully lined with bottle green silk. Gusseted underarms, darts to bust and back waist. Nylon, half-zipper to middle back.
Red and white label to inside reads: “elizabeth james”. Ms. James was a Cork designer working in Ireland in the 50s and 60s. Her firm designed for luminaries such as Grace Kelly and Princess Margaret.
Overall in very good vintage condition: there are a couple tiny stains to the front of the skirt (barely noticeable) and a small 1/4” tear to back of under arm; otherwise fabric is in great condition, including underskirt and lining.
Approximate measurements (laid flat): 15” waist (can be cinched with sash), armpit-to-armpit 18.5”, hips free, 39” length, 6” armholes (12” circumference), 106” circumference bottom hem.
