Antique 1800s cut steel and horn butterfly hair comb. Victorian, c. 1830-1880.

€120.00

Hair decoration comprised of individual, cut-steel studs riveted to a frame in the shape of a butterfly, complete with antennae. The winged insect is fastened to its horn prongs with a hinge that opens about 30 degrees, allowing the ornament to be optimally positioned in the hair.

Cut steel, known as “stars for the nobility”, was used by fashionable Victorians as an alternative to diamonds, offering a dark sparkle by candlelight.

In fantastic condition for its age. There is very little corrosion to the steel and the studs still glitter brightly. The horn comb is in very sound condition, with the only noted flaws being a little scuffing in one spot, just below the steel ornament.

Sourced in Dublin, Ireland.

Measures approximately: 9 x 3.3cm.
