1910s rolled-gold heart locket on vintage brass chain
Diminutive rolled-gold photo locket with embellished face. Opening the locket reveals a red interior with its original pane of celluloid 'glass' to one side. This locket was almost certainly a ‘sweetheart’ token given by a soldier to his mother, sister, wife, or girlfriend while he was at war. Popular in both the First and Second World Wars, this keepsake looks Edwardian to me, though I cannot be absolutely certain of the era.
Some pitting, rubbing and fine scratches to the back exterior (see pics), and a minor touch of verdigris to the hinge and interior, but otherwise in sound condition. Locket snaps securely shut with a satisfying click. Brass boxchain is new old stock from the 40s and is in excellent condition.
Locket measures 1.5cmH x 1.3cmW x .4cmD; chain measures 39cmL (unclasped).
